The chart is a map; with its aid we locate and fix a point on the ocean, in the heavens, or at a crossroads in the city's heart.
The compass is also a map, albeit a small one. The thirty-two points of direction that spider across the compass card, forming the Rose of the Winds, are more lasting than any geographic features drawn on other maps. Coastlines wash away, mountains erode, and lakes dry up; but the cardinal points of the compass remain unchanged in the mind and heart, awaiting their next use.
And we never truly understand any map of any region, until we have imposed the small map of the compass upon it.
