The title of this piece comes from the book of the same name, by Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend, which reconstructs an ancient Norse myth: a man named Amlodhi or Amleth owned a mill that produced peace and plenty; later on, during darker times, it ground out salt. Finally coming to rest at the bottom of the sea, it milled rock and sand, stirring up a large whirlpool called the Maelstrom (literally a "mill-storm"), which is located just off the Norwegian coast. The Maelstrom is purportedly an entrance to the land of the dead. (Artwork & description created & copyright by Eric Edelman. All rights reserved.)
